Group Health Insurance
There are a number of reasons to consider purchasing group health insurance. The major reason pertains to pre-existing conditions. In Colorado, for group sizes 2 to 50, insurers must cover pre-existing conditions. If you are changing insurance from an existing group plan to a new medical plan, the new insurer must accept ongoing medical conditions. If you are new to the group insurance market, and did not have prior coverage, the maximum pre-existing condition limitation under state law is six months. Certain HMO products, however, cover all medical conditions at the time the group is approved regardless of prior coverage. The key feature here is coverage for on-going medical conditions.
Group health plans also cover maternity with no pre-existing condition limitations. Even if you did not have prior group or individual coverage, the maternity is covered. This is not the case currently with individual, private plans.
In addition to the points above, group plans provide a wide variety of plan designs and physician networks. In fact, many insurers offer groups a choice of two or more plans to select from for their coverage. This feature allows employees a selection based on their particular budget. There is no need to have a ‘one size fits all’ mentality.
The group market also offers a choice in terms of doctor networks. Employers can choose Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO’s), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO’s), and Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPO’s). Each of these products is priced differently based on the level of discounts the insurers receive from the provider networks. All group health plans also cover routine wellness visits at 100% of the cost of the visit.
Group Health plans also have excellent prescription coverage. Many name brand prescriptions are covered at a fixed copayment which may be just a fraction of the real cost. Furthermore, most group insurers offer mail order services which provide substantial discounts from retail and a three month supply delivered to your residence.
